The Historic Atlas Theatre has long been a part of our downtown area. Built in 1887, the building began its existence as a confectionary, or candy store. It has been a vaudeville stage, a movie theatre, and even a discotheque called “The Pink Pony”. Then in the 1970's Cheyenne Little Theatre Players purchased the building to use as a permanent home for The Old Fashioned Melodrama. From that time to this there has been some renovation work done on the auditorium and lobby area and some of the equipment has been slightly upgraded. However, the time has now come to look at a full renovation of this Historically Registered building.
The list of items that need to be done on the building is, as one can imagine, a long one. From shoring up structural support to electrical upgrades, a new heating and cooling system, restructuring the upper two floors, new sound and lighting equipment, new curtains and a fire suppression system, we are looking at a major and costly project. The building is functional at this time, but for us to continue to grow as an organization these items need to be dealt with, and now is the time to start.
In November a public meeting was held to discuss and consider ideas and plans for the upstairs of the building. Rehearsal rooms, offices, recital space, a black box theatre, and an artists display gallery are just a few of the exciting ideas that were considered that evening.
Obviously, a project of this scope will have to be done in phases with the first phase involving having an architectural plan drawn up, doing the structural work that needs to be done, and updating the heating and cooling system and ductwork. The first step of this process is, of course, raising the funds to begin.
We urge you to consider how you might be able to help with this exciting renovation, whether it is through volunteer work, helping to raise funds or by making a financial contribution. To let us know how you are able to assist us please contact us at 638-6543, or email us through the link on this site.
Please help us to bring the beauty and history of this building to future generations of Cheyenne residents and visitors to our fair city.
Thanking You Sincerely,
Rory Mack
