Steven Kodaly (High baritone/tenor to g, 35-50): A handsome ladies’ man.  A womanizer with the charm to stay out of trouble.  Is there an insecurity below the veneer?
Ladislav Sipos (Baritone, 40+): Family man stuck in a dull existence.  Very agreeable, but is he hiding something?  A friend to all.
Mr. Maraczek (Baritone, 50+): Owner of the parfumerie.   A disciplined businessman.  A stubborn perfectionist who runs a tight shop.  What is his personal life lacking?

About She Loves Me:

Maraczek's Parfumerie is the setting for this romantic musical about the many entanglements of love. Georg Nowack and his co-workers lead quiet, uneventful lives as sales assistants in a little boutique in Budapest.   Enter Amalia Balash to change all that.   Amalia is hired as a clerk and tensions begin to mount inside the store.   Georg and Amalia feud even as they carry on a secret correspondence via letters addressed to “Dear Friend.”   Will they discover the identity of “Dear Friend?”   Will they realize their feelings for each other before it is too late?  Why has Maraczek turned on the son he never had? (Georg).

The musical is the fifth adaptation of the play Parfumerie by Hungarian playwright Miklos Laszlo, following the 1940 James Stewart-Margaret Sullivan film The Shop around the Corner and the 1949 Judy Garland-Van Johnson musical version In the Good Old Summertime. It would surface yet again in 1998 as the Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan feature You've Got Mail.

Contact the director at rbernhard@cheyennelittletheatre.org  if you have any questions about the show or the audition process. Please be sure to list all conflicts on audition forms.

THE MOUSETRAP
By Agatha Christie

Directed by Keith Neville

Auditions to be held at the Historic Atlas Theatre

Monday 26, and Tuesday 27 September 2011 starting at 6.30 p.m.
with call backs on Wednesday 28 September starting at 6.30 p.m.

Welcome to the world of Agatha Christie, the Dame of Thriller writers.

As a guest director for the CLTP, just a few words about myself as way of an introduction. I am a British director originally from Dulwich South London but now residing in Sevenoaks Kent. I trained in Stage Management at London’s Central School of Speech and Drama and I have directed over 70 plays, musicals and operas in London, Kent and Surrey. I approach each play or show as an adventure and although I have a duty to the audience to present the best show possible, I also have a duty to the cast and company to create a happy and enjoyable working atmosphere. I work very hard on the text of a play and I am a great believer in helping to create chemistry between actors. A happy and united team is a successful team. It is a great privilege to come to Cheyenne and I am looking forward to seeing you at the audition.

Regarding The Mousetrap - this thrilling classic play opened at the Ambassadors Theatre London on 25 November 1952 and is still entertaining audiences in London’s West End after nearly 59 years, therefore making it the longest running play in theatrical history.

This skilfully written murder mystery takes place in an English Manor, now converted into a guest house in rural Berkshire, not too far from London. The period is the early 1950’s and a snow storm has cut off the guests from the outside world. The proprietors, who have just opened the guest house, have assembled a wonderful assortment of strange and bizarre guests who are brought together into “a mousetrap” with no means of escape.  A Police Sergeant manages to ski to the guest house in time to warn them that a murderer, who has committed a ghastly crime in London, has arrived at the Guest House where another murder is imminent.

One of the guests is brutally strangled. One of the assembled persons at the house is the murderer. Who is it and why have they committed their crime? Who will be the next intended victim?

The secret is revealed at the end of the play and the cast request the audience  not to reveal the culprit to other theatre goers. This is a tradition that takes place nightly at the London production and it will be the case in Cheyenne.

The play has great suspense and humour and depicts that style of British theatre which is no longer to be seen in the West End or even in  the Provinces except at the St Martin’s Theatre London where The Mousetrap transferred without breaking it’s run in 1974.

The wonderful cast of characters are all splendid Agatha Christie creations:

Mollie Ralston – newly married and determined to make her guest house enterprise work. Middle to late 20’s. A pleasant young woman but not very confident.

Giles Ralston – slightly priggish and arrogant husband of Mollie. Slightly older than his newly married wife. There is an air of mystery about him.

Christopher Wren – a young man who is eccentric and very foppish. Spirited and highly strung he brings a lot of humour to the play.

Mrs Boyle – what in England is often called “an old battle axe”. Sharp, humourless and bad tempered. Never satisfied. Middle aged 50+

Major Metcalf -  a British retired army man probably  from the British Raj in India. Impeccable manners. Mature 60+ could be younger.

Miss Casewell – an outspoken young woman with  “ a slightly masculine appearance”. Probably has short hair and wears trousers and sweater. Mid 20’s.

Mr Paravicini – A continental gentlemen, probably Italian. Roguish, charming and very mysterious. The Unexpected Guest. Mature 40+

Detective Sergeant Trotter -  the policeman who arrives on skis. He has a working class London accent. Mid 20’s

Apart from Mr Paravicini all the characters are English and speak with middle class accents with the exception being the Police Sergeant, who has a slight  cockney London accent.

Please don’t worry about the accents as we will work on these and I am not expecting a polished accent at the auditions, just a willingness to work at it during rehearsals. (You haven’t heard my rendition of an American accent!)

The auditions will be relaxed and informal, where we will have groups of people reading together and perhaps improvising some moves and actions as time permits. I only have one requirement – we must have a tea break!

Keith Neville.

Please note: I am travelling to the United States on 4 September and I will arrive in Cheyenne on Sunday 25 September. If you have any questions or need any further guidance please write to me keith.neville@tiscali.co.uk  before 3 September or please contact the Assistant Director John Lyttle after that date.
