Funds and donations are sought for interior renovations of the Historic Atlas Theater
This project is the first phase of interior renovations. The goal of this phase is to address public health and safety issues, deferred maintenance, and aesthetic issues for the historic Atlas Theater. And yes! the plan is that air conditioning will be installed in time for the 2014 Old-Fashioned Melodrama. There are a couple of grants pending and a great start to donations. But we cannot do this without your help. We've also assembled a great reward package for donors.
ABOUT THE HISTORIC ATLAS THEATER: Constructed in 1888 as offices and a tearoom, the Atlas Building was converted to a theater in 1908. Master Wyoming architect, William Dubois, drew up the plans for the conversion, which called for seating of 550, a stage sufficient for the traveling companies of the time, a soda fountain, a penny arcade, and a confectionery parlor. Today, the Historic Atlas, which seats about 250 people, is used both for the Old Fashioned Melodrama and for CLTP productions. Other groups, as well as private individuals, frequently rent the space for weddings, meetings and performances. The historic theater is in need of major renovation, and this project is one of the CLTP’s major priorities.
The Historic Atlas Theater is located in the heart of downtown Cheyenne at 211 W. Lincolnway, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. CLTP is implementing its vision for the Atlas venue as a live entertainment and arts hub for downtown Cheyenne. In addition to CLTP's seasonal theater programming and the annual Melodrama, the Atlas theater currently hosts live music events ranging from jazz and classical to heavy metal. A regular comedy troupe, Ozymandian Theater, calls the Atlas home, and our rental and programming staff has been active in diversifying this venue. As rentals and partnerships are built, the organization anticipates a reputation can be built that "there's always something happening at the Atlas theater." The additional audiences will, in turn, provide new opportunities for downtown businesses.
