Notes from the Author:
Writing and working on The City That Cried Wolf has been an overwhelming 3 year process, that I began as a Junior at Hampshire College, then carried on to New York and now continues here in my hometown of Cheyenne. I could not be more pleased.
As a playwriting student, my main goal in writing this play was to create a piece of theater that would be essentially FUN to do. So many of my peers were writing lofty existential odes, or depressing angst-ridden diatribes, and I did not relish adding to their number. So I set out to write a comedy. A comedy that would let actors and designers have the opportunity to play with larger than life characters in a dark story-themed world.
At this stage, I cannot take full credit for the work. There have been so many people who have helped shape the play. My very good friend and the director of the first production, Ben Kahn, was instrumental in the shaping of its basic form. Byam Stevens, artistic director of The Chester Theater, work shopped and helped me to look with a polished eye towards the many details of the story. The State of Play theater players, after working with the script for a whole year and a half, through two separate productions have helped me fine tune and several times came up with funnier jokes that are now added into the script. And last but not least, I owe a significant debt to Len Berkman, playwrighting professor at Smith College, and friend and mentor, for providing me with truly invaluable support. A more generous and amazing individual I have not met.
In other words, this play is the product of a long history of collaboration, fine tunings, and the sweat and wine stained tears of many a night staring at the computer screen looking for one more joke, one more pun, one more reference. It's been a tremendous experience and I hope you enjoy the final product as much as I've enjoyed making it.
