Characters:

Amanda Wingfield: The mother of Laura and Tom.  Age 50-55.  She is somewhat frantic, yet tragic.  Very protective and controlling of her children, but not cruel.  She has much for us to love, laugh at, and pity.  Amanda was raised in the south, but now lives in St. Louis with her children.

Laura Wingfield:  Daughter of Amanda, sister of Tom.  Age 25-35.  Lives in a world of illusion which includes her glass figurine collection.  A childhood illness left her with one leg slightly shorter than the other, but this is not overly obvious to the audience.  Laura is timid, shy and afraid.  She feels deep longing that has yet to be fulfilled.

Tom Wingfield:  The narrator of our story.  Age 25-35.  Tom is a dark poet who does not belong where he currently exists.  He wants to escape his job and his mother but feels connection to Laura.  Tom is 2 years younger than Laura but has a timeless, ageless quality.

Jim O’Connor (the Gentleman Caller):  Age 25-35.  Jim works with Tom and is a nice, personable young man.  He enters the home on Tom’s invitation for dinner.  Jim was in high school with Laura.

The setting of the play is the Wingfield home in St. Louis.  The year is 1938.
